CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) -- Crawford County residents have lawyered up - hoping to update planning and zoning ordinances to protect the residents and their properties in the future from businesses they fear could create devastating effects on the area.
Concerned resident Monica Miller, spoke with WGXA during a Planning and Zoning public hearing on Thursday. She said now that the rock quarry is there to stay, she and other residents fear other problems could come pounding into the community.
"We were blindsided by the rock quarry," Miller said. "There are other things in that book that we would be blindsided with."
Miller said now the rock quarry has made its home in the county, close to Girl Scout Road and near residential houses, she said more problems could come pounding in.
"That comes with asphalt plants and concrete plants," she feared. "We're trying to write our stipulations."
Crawford resident Ken Smith said that type of business comes at the expense of the locals living in the community.
To help ensure that doesn't happen in the future, Smith hired planning and zoning attorney Bill Larsen, to help ensure ordinances are updated and worded properly and within the county's guidelines.
"I can't stop you, I can't say no, but if you want to do business, I can tell you, this is how we do business," Miller concluded.
P&Z is considering adding some of the suggestions discussed during the hearing. They'll be reviewed at another public hearing on May 16., before going in front of Crawford County commissioners for their final say.
